SAFA – An update on grassroots football

The Joint Response Group (JRG) looks forward to a further update from the First Minister as sports progress through the next phase of the route map out of lockdown, expected on Thursday 9 July.

It is anticipated that this will include information on the phased reintroduction of club based grassroots football for children and young people.

The JRG Grassroots sub group is working with Scottish Government, sportscotland and other stakeholders to ensure that the appropriate advice is available to enable the safe return of football in line with the lifting of lockdown restrictions. More detail will be provided as soon as possible after the announcement on Thursday.

An update for everyone involved in adult football without the ability to meet government agreed testing protocols will also be provided. At this stage we would envisage that no adult league matches will take place before October, although formal contact training may be able to return before then.

Any indicative dates may change, subject to relevant public health and Scottish Government advice, and we will continue to update the relevant permitted activity via the Scottish FA Return to Football Hub.

The JRG would like to reiterate that at the Scottish FA’s suspension on formal training and matches remains in place for those outwith the Scottish Premiership. The suspension will be reviewed in line with the information released by Scottish Government and updated guidance will be provided shortly after.

At this time, the Grassroots sub group would like to reinforce the message that any physical activity taking place must be in line with Scottish Government guidelines. For more information on all aspects of the return to football please visit

We would like to thank you for all you have done to support your communities throughout this period and for the patience shown during these challenging times.

Thomas McKeown, Scottish FA Board Director and Chair of the JRG Grassroots Sub Group
