BLACKBURN 5 KEMNAY YOUTH 2
AAFA Division Two East
Saturday 15th February 2020
Kinellar Play Park, Blackburn
Ref – L Henderson-Thynne

Blackburn went 8 points clear of 3rd place Feughside in the Division Two East table with a hard-fought win against a spirited Kemnay Youth at Blackburn. Second-half goals from Bryce Mclernon and Goncalo Cuhna were added too by an Grant Lamb brace as the promotion chasers added to their points tally moving to 37 points.

A foul, bitterly cold afternoon, featuring another blustery wind sending the heavy rain and sleet blowing across the extremely soft surface, greeted the players and the small crowd of hardy travelling support at Kinellar Play Park.

Kemnay were on the front foot from the off and kept Blackburn penned into their own half in the early minutes. It was the hosts who had the first real chance when an Owen Harper free-kick was fired past the Kemnay keeper to put the hosts into the lead. With the weather refusing to improve and the visitors having more determination to grab the next goal, Blackburn was struggling to deal with the Kemnay midfield and it wasn’t long before an audacious shot from Kemnay saw Darren Smith lobbed on his goal line.

Blackburn looked a different side almost immediately, a weight added to the shoulders, almost as if they could see a promotion to Division One slipping away from them and it wasn’t long before Kemnay found the back of the next for a second time.

Two chances and two goals.

HALF TIME: BLACKBURN 1 KEMNAY YOUTH 2

Cuhna was introduced at the break for the hosts, Cranham replaced, just minutes into the half, a speculative Lee Milne shot from 25 yards rattled the crossbar before landing at the feet of Goncalo Cuhna to net the equaliser for the hosts.

Blackburn got themselves going as a threat again, Bryce McLernon finding the net twice with his head to put the game beyond Kemnay who had no real response to the dominant performance from the home side. The game was beginning to drift now, Blackburn playing within themselves, Kemnay energetic but lacking any real inventive spark. Invention did come from Grant Lamb when he too got his name placed on the score sheet.

As the game entered added time, Kemnay won a corner out on the left after a good run. The corner was caught by the wind and flew out for a throw on the opposite side, bringing the evening’s proceedings to a close, Blackburn running out emphatic winners.

Despite the dreadful conditions, Blackburn had played some very good football and produced some real quality in front of goal.
